Lavrov says NATO aims to make Eurasia its “fiefdom”
According to Lavrov, NATO has artificially extended its reach far beyond the Euro-Atlantic region, invoking concepts like “the indivisibility of Euro-Atlantic security” and the “Indo-Pacific region” to justify its presence. He accused the alliance of seeking to contain China, isolate Russia, and confront North Korea.
Lavrov highlighted NATO’s influence in the Middle East, South Caucasus, Central Asia, and South Asia, claiming its policies are often “extremely negative.” He asked rhetorically whether Russia’s vast continent should become “NATO’s fiefdom,” stressing that Moscow cannot accept such a scenario.
The minister also voiced concerns over NATO’s Arctic ambitions, emphasizing that Russia and other “sensible countries” want the region to remain a zone of peace and cooperation.
Addressing Western claims of a Russian threat, Lavrov reiterated that Russia has no plans to attack NATO countries and is willing to legally commit to this in future security guarantees. He accused the West of preparing for a “new great European war” and noted that EU leaders seek guarantees “not with Russia’s participation, but against Russia.”
Lavrov concluded that NATO and EU elites isolate any country pursuing independent policies, leaving little hope for meaningful dialogue with most European decision-makers.
