Kim Jong Un Defends Missile Tests
His remarks followed Pyongyang’s launch of hypersonic missiles on Sunday from the Ryokpho district in Pyongyang Municipality.
The missiles traveled northeast and struck targets 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) away, according to a news agency’s report on Monday.
The statement came shortly after the United States carried out a pre-dawn operation in Venezuela on Saturday, detaining the nation’s president and first lady, who were later transported to New York.
Kim emphasized that the missile launch demonstrated that a “very important technology task for national defense has been carried out” and "showed the readiness of the DPRK's (North Korea's) nuclear forces."
He added: “Important achievements have been recently made in putting our nuclear forces on a practical basis and preparing them for an actual war,” stressing that North Korea “must continuously upgrade the military means, especially offensive weapon systems.”
“To be honest,” Kim said during the launch, “our such activity is clearly aimed at gradually putting the nuclear war deterrent on a highly developed basis.”
“The reason why it is necessary is exemplified by the recent geopolitical crisis and complicated international events,” he concluded.
