North Korea Conducts Cluster Warhead Missile Test
The launch was overseen by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who was present to assess the performance of the missile’s warhead, according to a state-operated news agency. The objective of the test was to “verify the characteristics and power of cluster bomb warhead and fragmentation mine warhead applied to the tactical ballistic missile,” as reported by the agency.
The missiles reportedly struck a designated target zone near an island at an approximate range of 136 kilometers (85 miles), achieving “very high density.” KCNA further stated that Kim Jong Un showed “great satisfaction” with the operation, describing it as of “weighty significance.”
On Sunday, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) indicated it had tracked the missile launches from the Sinpo region of North Korea at about 6:10 a.m. (2110GMT Saturday). The projectiles traveled around 140 kilometers (87 miles), according to a media outlet.
