South Korea Urges for Global Action on North Korea Nuclear Threat

(MENAFN) South Korea has called for urgent and coordinated international action to address North Korea’s nuclear program, warning that it poses what it considers the most serious challenge to the global nonproliferation system, according to a news agency on Tuesday.

Vice Foreign Minister Jeong Yeon-doo delivered the remarks during a Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) conference held in New York. He highlighted that North Korea remains a unique case, noting that it withdrew from the treaty and has continued advancing its nuclear weapons program.

“The DPRK is the only case that has benefited from the NPT regime, announced its withdrawal, and openly continued the development of nuclear weapons, thereby remaining the most pressing challenge to the nonproliferation regime,” Jeong said.

He urged the international community to present a unified stance, arguing that North Korea’s long-term security and economic prospects depend on rejoining the treaty framework.

Jeong also appealed to Russia to end its military cooperation with Pyongyang, warning that such collaboration undermines United Nations Security Council resolutions and weakens the broader nonproliferation architecture.

The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which has been in effect since 1970, is a key international agreement designed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons while encouraging the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Its review conferences are held every five years to evaluate compliance and progress among member states.
