North Korea Launches Multiple Ballistic Missiles Into Yellow Sea
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the launches were detected at approximately 1 p.m. local time (0400 GMT), originating from the Jongju area in North Phyongan Province. The projectiles were classified as short-range ballistic missiles — weapons systems with a maximum operational range below 300 kilometers (186 miles).
Seoul moved swiftly in response, ramping up surveillance operations and closely monitoring the situation for any additional launches. South Korean authorities said they are actively coordinating intelligence-sharing efforts with Washington and Tokyo while sustaining full combat readiness.
Tuesday's launches are the latest in a string of recent provocations. Pyongyang conducted short-range missile tests in April and carried out cruise missile trials on April 12, both personally overseen by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
The timing has drawn particular attention amid mounting speculation that Chinese President Xi Jinping may make a visit to North Korea within the coming weeks — a trip that could carry significant diplomatic implications for the region.
Despite the escalation, Seoul extended an olive branch to the North, urging dialogue and cooperation to advance stability across the Korean Peninsula.
"We once again call on North Korea to respond to our peace policy and efforts to ease tensions," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Park Il said.
