Ex-South Korean President Gets Thirty Years in Prison Over Drone Plot

(MENAFN) A South Korean court has sentenced former president Yoon Suk Yeol to 30 years in prison, according to reports, after finding that he took actions intended to heighten tensions with North Korea and justify the imposition of martial law.

The court concluded that Yoon ordered drones to be deployed into North Korean territory in an effort to provoke a response and create conditions that would support his decision to declare martial law.

Yoon had imposed martial law in December 2024, citing political deadlock and alleging the existence of what he described as a plot involving pro-Pyongyang elements within the domestic political system. However, lawmakers quickly moved to overturn the decree within hours, even as police and military personnel reportedly attempted to restrict access to the National Assembly.

He was later impeached within days, suspended from office, and ultimately removed by the Constitutional Court several months afterward.

On Friday, a Seoul court ruled that Yoon had misused his authority and “benefited the enemy” through the alleged drone operation, among other charges, and handed down the lengthy prison sentence. The court also stated, according to reports, that his actions undermined South Korea’s military interests by exposing operational capabilities and prompting a more defensive posture from Pyongyang.

Two senior former officials were also sentenced in connection with the case. Former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun received a 30-year sentence, while former Defense Counterintelligence Command chief Yeo In-hyung was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
